Tamil Nadu is a southern state of
India with lots of fabulous places to visit. Colorful and richly sculpted
temples, ancestral ruins of Hindu temples, cosmopolitan and authentic cities,
Tamil Nadu can be a great travel destination for those going to know South
India.
1. Mamallapuram
Mamallapuram is a small village on
the Indian coast with a fabulous atmosphere and good food. Mamallapuram invites
to spend the night and spend a few days there. You can stay at the Meya Beach
Walk Hotel. Do not miss the village but also the magnificent temples and
monuments such as Costa's Temple, Penance of Arjuna, Panch Rathas, Temple
excavated by Panch Pandara, Khrisna's Butterball, Khapna Mandapa, Temple of
Olakkkanatha, Ganesh Ratha, Excavated Temple of Varaha, Temple excavated from
Trimurdi, Adivaraha Excavated Temple, Temple excavated from Mahishasuramardini,
Archaeological Museum, Tiger Cave (4 km) and Temple of Vedagirisvara (17 km)
2. Pondicherry
Pondicherry is a French colonial city
founded in the 17th century. With an orthogonal plan and facing the Gulf of
Bengal, the city has gardens, wide avenues, European mansions and Christian
churches, mixed with Hindu temples. Do not miss the Pondicherry Museum, the
Manakula Vinayakar Temple, the Aurobindo Ashram or the French School.
3. Auroville
8 km from Pondicherry is Auroville, a
city created so that all people could live harmoniously. It is very popular
with foreigners who seek a mystical India and live there in
community. The community has 40 colonies and welcomes people from all over the
world to volunteer and meditate.
4. Tanjore
Tanjore is one of the largest cities
in South India, located in the Kaveli River Delta. Surrounded by rice fields,
the city still has a beautiful fort, the Shivaganga Fort, the Brihadishvara
Temple, a magnificent Hindu temple, the Church of Schwartz, a Christian church
heritage of colonial times, a Royal Palace with a tower of fabulous viewing, museums
and libraries.
5. Srirangam
This is one of the top religious
sites in South India and it attracts thousands of pilgrims. This small island
and its Temple of Ranganatha are filled with life on the festive occasions
connected with the life of Vishnu. The temple is grand and by itself already
deserves a visit but there is more to see, namely the Jambukeshvara Temple and
the magnificent Kaveri River.
6. Madurai
Madurai is a still very preserved
city of foreign glances. The magnificent Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple is the
city's main monument and one of the most beautiful temples in India. The
original temple dates from the seventh century and has 12 truly fabulous
gopura, 50 meters high, and richly carved and painted in a colorful way. But
beyond the temple, Madurai has so much more to offer. Do not miss the
Thirumalai Nayaska Palace, the Anglican Cathedral, the Sultans' Tombs of the
city, the Temple of Kadal Alagar, the fresh market where the banana coloring is
done and the flower market.
7. Chennai
Chennai is the largest city in the state of Tamil Nadu and South India. The city is very cosmopolitan
full of pollution and chaotic traffic. However, Chennai is nothing more than an
urban cluster that united dozens of villages, many of them fishing, in a single
urban spot. This makes every neighborhood of Chennai still live in a very rural
way yet within the largest city in the region.
