Have you been
contemplating doing up your home with Islamic
calligraphy canvas art?Animportant new trend in Islamic wall art Arabic calligraphy is the application of canvas
and colours. In this kind of art, verses from the Quran are painted or printed
on canvas in a calligraphic style. Canvas is the material used here. Because of
the use of new material as well as digital printing, it comes under the
category of modern Islamic art.
In traditional
Islamic wall art, anayator surah of the Quran is stitched with golden thread on
a black cloth, mostly comprised pf silk or velvet. The choice of colours comes
from the shades of the cloth that covers the Ka’aba at the Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah.
Traditional or classical Islamic wall art also comprises of colourful wall rugs,
usually made in Iran, Turkeyand India. These carpets are filled with dense floral
patterns on the borders even as Islamic calligraphy is neatly stitched onto the
middle portion.
With time, there have
been innovations in Islamic wall artin the form of the application of new
mediums and techniques. Two trendsdeserve special mention. One, wall decals.
These are large, low-priced vinyl stickers that can be directly stuck to the surface
of the wall bypassing the need to frame or drive a nail into the wall. Wall
decals are produced without colours or backgrounds or other visualdistractions,
thereby turning the attention of the onlooker to the calligraphy and the
message of the text.
The second important category
is Islamic canvas art. Different
from the text -only focus of walls decals, Islamic canvasart uses colours to draw
attention to the calligraphic art and more importantly, the verses displayed on
it.
Colours are an
important aspect of wall décor. A splash of hues lifts up the look of our homes
and reportedly enhances our moods too. The old saying ‘add colour
to your life’ implies that one should
live their life with colour, that is with passion andpositivity. Many people these
days paint the walls of their homes in a colour other than white. Sometimes, only
one wall in a room is painted in a shade other than white, usually a very
bright or a very dark hue so as to add to the contrast.
Islamic calligraphy
canvas art applies
colours and canvas to Islamic wall art Arabic calligraphy .Canvas
has an artistic texture which uplifts the visual appeal of the artwork. Colours,
be they of any shade - red, blue, green, purple,
beige et al – are used as well. Sometimes, only one colour is used, and sometimes
multiple hues are applied onto the canvas. Generally, the calligraphy and the
backdrop are in contrasting colours. But colours are only an
attention-attracting tool, and calligraphy remains the focus of Islamic canvas
art. After all, when it comes to the art of Islamic calligraphy, the message is of utmost importance.
Everything else is secondary and is used only to draw attention to the message.
