The basic element
of any work of Islamic calligraphy art is an “ayat” or verse of the GlorQuran.
Most people search for specific ayats of the Quran or generally search for “ayats art” or “best ayats art”.
An ayat, as we
said, is a verse of the Quran. Each chapter is made up of a set number of ayats
or verses. An Arabic word, ‘Ayat’ also refers to the ‘Signs’ of Allah, which
include the Miracle of the Quran itself, the evidences of His Creation in
Nature, such as the mountains, the rivers, the trees, the fruits, the animals,
etc, His Perfect Order and Governance in the natural processes such as the
alternation of Day and Night, the rejuvenation of the dead earth when rain
falls on it, thus leading to new life in the form of plants, emerging from it,
the birth of the human child etc.
Repeatedly, the
Quran reminds people to look at theSigns in Nature, and even within them and
ponder over them. Would they still live in denial and believe that the whole Universe
came into being on its own? Or that they were born without the Will and Mercy
of Allah? Or would they worship false deities who can neither help them nor
help themselves? Would they refuse to believe in the Final Resurrection given
that Allah causes the dead earth to bring out life after pouring rain on it?
Some of the verses
of the Quran which mention these Signs are given below:
“And of his signs is the creation of the heavens
and earth and what He has dispersedthroughout them of creatures. And He, for
gathering them when He wills, is competent.” (Surah Ash-shuraa, ayah 29)
"And a sign for them is the dead earth. We
have brought it to life and brought forth from it grain, and from it they eat.”(Surah
Yasin, verse 33)
“And they denied
him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not
to be believers.”(Surah Ash-shu’araa verse 139)
“You are but a man like
ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."(Surah
Ash-shu’araa154)
“These are the verses of Allah which We recite to
you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His verses will they
believe?”(Surah Al Jathiya Verse 6)
“And it is He who spread the earth and placed
therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from all of the fruits He made
therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are
signs for a people who give thought.” (Surah Ar-Rad, verse 3)
Indeed, there are Signs everywhere and Allah
commands us to use our faculty of observation and thinking. The Quran itself is
a Sign, an Evidence of His Mercy, and it is made up of several chapters divided
into “verses”, also called “ayats”.
